Kyuasini Secondary School

Kyuasini Secondary School is situated in Okia location, Kaiti Division, Makueni County, Eastern Province of Kenya. This school serves a wider region of Okia which has over 10 primary schools in the area. It has a population of 360 students with 8 classes. Each class has approximately 45 students. The students are aged between 14-19 years. The school is run and headed by the Principal with a team of 6 government teachers and 3 teachers employed by the Board of Governors. Therefore in total it has 9 teachers.

Training

Training of the interns will be carried out on the first three days of the arrival, where they will be taken through a basic teaching training programme, information and methods of handling local children highlighted. Depending on the background of the interns, the training will entail:
  • Overview of the Kenyan education system
  • Guidelines of teaching high school students in general
  • Lesson plan
  • Teach with your mind
  • Presentation of yourself
  • Timing of a class
  • Engagement in extra curricular activities training
  • Development of a teaching module
  • Basic frame work of teaching
  • Voice projection
  • Development of a first lesson
  • Extracurricular activities

Project description

The project is based on a teaching and learning basis in the sense that the interns will learn a lot from the profession while also imparting knowledge to the students, staff and general community.
  • The interns will be allocated subjects to teach in the school
  • They will also work on the socio cultural education on Kenya and Netherlands
  • The interns will formulate a guidance and counseling club that will engage thestudents through guiding them on the following:
  • Challenges and how to over come them
  • Career choice after school
  • Dealing with physical and emotional changes
  • The development of social and personal development of the students.

Supervision

The interns will work under the school Principal and his deputy. They will be supervised by either of the two. However, they will be mentored by the Mafanikio Team who has education and administration backgrounds respectively.
  • Upon arrival at the school, interns will be taught Swahili language on a daily basis.
  • The supervisor/Principal will check on keenly on their progress and offer assistance
    whenever possible and needed.
  • The mentor will help the interns adopt and adjust into the local community and culture.
  • Through the mentoring the intern will be able to engage in social & cultural education

Meals and Accommodation

  • In order for the interns to develop in social and cultural education, they will need to engage with the local community and get immersed into the local culture.
  • To be able to implement this, the interns will leave with the host families where they will be given their own personal room for privacy. They will also share meals with the family. This will give them opportunity to further develop in their social life skills.
  • Drinking water will be available in plenty
  • Worth noting is that there is no electricity in the area.

Geographical Features

This region is in the semi arid area on top of the mountain with very beautiful scenery. It is rocky in nature and has a cool breeze especially at night. In the day, it gets quite hot.

Social amenities

Kyuasini is a mini shopping centre in the village. It has shops for basic stuffs such as toilet papers, bread, fruits etc. The next town is Wote which is approximately 15 kilo meters. This town has all the facilities, internet, supermarkets, markets, shopping malls, hotels, hospitals, banks etc. The other town which is approximately an hour away is Machakos town which is quite big compared to Wote and has double the amenities.

Security

The security in the area is very secure and the local administration is aware of the interns’ presence in the community. Please note that we take security matters very seriously and in the event of any urgency, we are insured in the evacuation.

Emergency

The host family and the Principal are the key contacts for the Organization while in the field. In case of any emergency, they should be notified and will notify the office. They will also take action immediately. The office line is constantly open for 24 hours.
