Medical ProgrammeAs an intern in the medical programme, you will work in a medical institution in Kenya (mostly Nairobi) such as a general hospital or a rehabilitation center. The internship at the hospital aims to give the students an insight into the medical field on practical levels. This is an opportunity for the student to gain experience through the performing duties and responsibilities entrusted on him/her during this period under the supervision of a senior officer. It is also an eye opener on the challenges that the hospital management and staff face on a daily basis in the process to serve the patients as well as bringing to terms the level of commitment and the responsibility needed to perform. On the other hand, the institution stands to gain from the extra pair of hands in terms of manpower and skills from the volunteer. Project descriptionThe internship is intended to address but not limited to;
The above mentioned activities are some but a few of the issues that could be addressed but of great importance and worth noting is that the medical institution where the internship will take place will advise on the viability of the aforementioned subjects and advice appropriately over the same. The main focus is experiential learning after a couple of years in study of medicine in school. Although this might prove different based on country of origin the skills and study involved boil down to the same thing. Some of the objectives include:
The responsibilities of the intern will be indicated by the supervisor based on need and ability to perform. All interns undertaking this programme are required to have and keep an open mind and a keen eye. This will help them fit into the institution and pick the duties quickly. The hospital administration will induct the intern for the first week after which he/she will join the other members of staff. They will also monitor the progress of the volunteer to ensure that he/she follows the rules and regulations of the hospital. Meals and accommodation
SupervisionThe doctor in charge will supervise the interns and allocate them duties on a daily basis. City lifeNairobi city is cosmopolitan and this makes it a very safe place to live in. The night life is very interesting and appealing but not advisable to the interns. Besides that there are several interesting places worth visiting. SecurityNairobi just like any other city in the world has its challenges on security. However, the government is duly notified and aware of the interns’ presence in the area and place of work for the entire duration. We take security matters very seriously therefore background check is done prior to the placement. The interns are also advised to be keen and careful not to expose themselves or put themselves on a vulnerable position. EmergencyIn case of emergency, notify the hospital administrator or the doctor in charge. That should be followed by a telephone call to the office and it will act immediately. The office line is open 24 hours. In case of urgent emergency, we are insured for evacuation and necessary action will be taken. Application procedureYou can apply for an internship following the normal procedures, using the online registration form or a Word form. In one of the comment fields, please mention specifically that you are applying for an internship.
