Mount Kenya Heritage Centre

Mt. Kenya Heritage Centre is a new concept in tourism industry where they focus more into re-living old and dying cultural practices with intention of reviving and restoring some of the old good practices. The centre attracts people from all over the world to come and experience, learn and get entertained. It is situated in Murang’a, near Mt. Kenya approximately 1,5 hours from the city centre of
Nairobi and 70 km from Mt. Kenya. It works closely with the local community to promote the local culture and heritage.

Project description

The main objective of the Mt. Kenya Heritage Center is to improve the standard of living by integrating the cultural and modern life. Mount Kenya heritage centre brings people of all gender, age, social class, race and different religions in enhancing good living standards for the benefits of the society.The following are our objectives:

Encourage good cultural practices;
Promote environmental conservation through community awareness and
participation;
Elevate the living standards for the local community;
Help the community to embrace culture and modernity through objective thinking and community participation.

Duties and responsibilities include the following:

Mt. Kenya Heritage Center is a new centre, therefore it needs a lot of work to be done in order to get more established and structured. It’s a good challenge that will put to task the interns to deliver and will be able to see their work on a short and long term basis. Responsibilities include:

Marketing the centre locally and internationally
Identifying and implementing the strengths of the centre
Improving services
Public relations and advertising
Collaborating with the local community to strengthen the centre
Managing tourists and implementing the programme
Organizing events
Tourism and events management

Supervision

Supervision will be carried out by the Manager who is in charge of the Centre. He will advice and allocate duties where he deems necessary. He will oversee the running of the centre and consult in relations to the duties and responsibilities.Meals and Accommodation

Since the interns will be working in the heart of cultural and social welfare, they will get a first hand experience of social and cultural education and tourism management.
They will live within the centre premises and will share meals with locals.
Drinking water will be available in plenty
Worth noting is that there is no power at the centre.

Geographical Features

Mt. Kenya Heritage Center is situated at the bottoms of Mt Kenya approximately 70 km, surrounded by a lot of mountains and hills and running rivers. There is a river delta in the area and also has a lot of birds. It is beautifully surrounded by the coffee and tea plantation that are seasonally harvest. It has one of the best stunning sceneries.

Social Amenities

The nearest town is Murang’a town which is approximately 18 km from the centre and has all amenities ranging from hospitals, banks, hotels, cyber café etc. The other local towns have also basic stuff like tissues, bread, fruits etc.

Security

Before the arrival of the interns in the region the local and provincial administration is normally informed and aware of the intern’s presence in the village. It is a very safe and secure place. Please note that we take security matters very seriously and in the event of any emergency we are insured for the evacuation.

Emergency

The Manager and the head of the local community are key contacts for the organization while in the field. In case of any emergency notify them immediately and they will take urgent and necessary action as well as notify the office. The office line is constantly open for 24 hours. The office representative will get to the project within a period of 2 hours after the phone call.
